About Serene

Serene specializes in relationships (including pre-marital and marital issues); women's issues, including healing the emotional impact of childbirth; and trauma. She uses various techniques, including EMDR. Serene is a Certified SYMBIS Assessment Facilitator, a revolutionary pre-marital/ marital assessment.  Through warmth, validation, compassion, and prayer, Serene empowers you to develop your potential for lasting progress.

Serene earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology at Virginia Wesleyan College and then a Master of Arts degree in psychology at Texas A&M University.  She also completed additional postgraduate work in marriage and family therapy at Old Dominion University.

Serene adheres to the Ethical Codes of: AACC (American Association for Christian Counselors),AAMFT (American Association for Marriage & Family Therapy), ACA (American Counseling Association), and NBCC (National Board of Certified Counselors).

Serene is a Presidential Member of the American Association for Christian Counselors (AACC), with membership in the Marriage and Family Network Division. She is also a member of the International Society of Mental Health Online (ISMHO).

Serene's professional experience includes clinical, supervisory, and administrative roles in a variety of settings.  She has worked with all ages with a broad spectrum of issues, from everyday stress to dealing with a history of abuse & trauma.  During her 20+ years in the counseling field, Serene has helped to launch new clinical programs; directed a residential program for delinquent youth; supervised clinical, direct care staff, and management; and developed her private practice.  Serene remains active in the counseling field, attending workshops and training regularly.  She consistently exceeds the licensing boards's continuing education requirements every year.  This helps Serene to always be aware of new research, theories, and techniques to ensure that she is offering the latest, most effective treatment.  Serene provides training for local businesses and agencies on a variety of issues, including: balancing life and work, stress management, and dealing with change in the workplace.  And she has presented at local and national conferences, including: Florida Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ), National Adolescent Perpetrator Network (NAPN), Association for the Advancement of Behavior Therapy (AABT), and Chesapeake Council on Youth Services (CCOYS) / Norfolk Interagency Council on Services to Youth (NICOSTY) on effective  treatment. Serene has co-authored journal articles and a chapter in a book.
